Places to Visit in Ayodhya | Ayodhya City – Ram Janmabhoomi Temple

The ancient city of Ayodhya is known to be a part of the epic Ramayana and is the birthplace of God Ram.

Fun fact: Ayodhya is about 9000 years old.

Moreover, it is one of the most visited pilgrim spots and is famous for its various temples.

How to Reach

 

By Air

 

Unfortunately, Ayodhya does not have an airport.

The nearest airport is Gorakhpur Airport which is 118 km away.

Also, Amausi Airport is 125 km away.

 

By Train

 

Ayodhya is very well connected to the major parts of the country by train.

You can get regular buses from other major cities of the country to Ayodhya.

Places to Visit in Ayodhya

 

1. Ram Janmabhoomi Temple

Ram Janmabhoomi Temple is one of the major attractions in Ayodhya city. It is considered as the birth place of Lord Ram, the 7th incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Mughal emperor Babur demolished the original temple and built a mosque at the site.

However, the mosque was also demolished in 1992.

 

Entry Fees: No entry fee

 

Opening hours: 5 am to 12 pm and 4 pm to 9:30 pm

2. Moti Mahal

Famous for its Mughal architecture, many people visits this place. It was the residence of wife of Nawab Shuja-ud-Daula and was constructed in 1743 AD.

Opening Hours: Monday – Friday, 12 pm to 11 pm, Saturday –  5:30 pm to 11 pm

3. Hanuman Garhi

It is one of the most visited temples in Ayodhya. In order to reach the temple, 70 steep steps need to be scaled. Hanuman Garhi is dedicated to Lord Hanuman and Nawab of Awadh built it.

 

Entry Fees: INR 100 per person

 

Opening Hours: 6 am to 6 pm

4. Kanak Bhawan

The spot at which the temple is built was once considered to have another temple which was gifted to Sita immediately after her marriage by Lord Ram’s step mother Kaikeyi.

 

However, King Vikramaditya of the Paramara dynasty later renovated the temple and again rebuilt in 1891. Kanak Bhawan is one of the most elaborately detailed places in Ayodhya and the architecture is marvelous.

What to Expect? / Tips

 

  • You must visit Ayodhya city in the winter months as the weather is very pleasant.
  • Do not show too much skin, as India is a very conservative country.
  • Expect a lot of beggars along the streets asking for money and food.
  • Be careful of the vendors that’ll try and con you.
